When you first move to Costa Rica, you’ll likely apply for Temporary Residency. This lets you stay longer than a tourist visa -usually for 2 years- and it’s renewable. You won’t need to leave and re-enter the country during this time. After living in Costa Rica under Temporary Residency for at least 3 years, you can apply to change your status to Permanent Residency.

Depending on the type of residency you’re applying for, specific documentation and requirements may vary. However, all expatriates will generally need to provide the following core documents.
– Birth Certificate
– Police Clearance Certificate
– Passport Copies
– Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
– Consular Registration
– Fingerprints (taken in Costa Rica)
– Recent Passport Photos
You’ll need to get the required documents in your home country, and the authentication process should be completed there as well. The process depends on whether your country is a member of the Apostille Treaty. If it is, your documents only need to be apostilled and do not require further authentication. However, if your country is not a member, you will need to follow additional legalization procedures. To learn more, don’t hesitate to contact us.
